Here is a Lionel 6-11281 B&O Conventional 2-8-2 Mikado Steam Locomotive #451. First used on Japanese railways in the early 1900s, the Mikado steam locomotive became one of the principal freight locomotives of North America. The excellent starting tractive effort of these 2-8-2 steam locomotives made them great fast-speed haulers of heavy freight, securing them a place of importance on American railways.

Introduced at the turn of the 20th century, the 2-8-2 was an innovator breaking from the traditional manufacturing of locomotives, and featuring a larger firebox paving the way for greater speeds at a higher rate of power! Before we knew it, the 2-8-2 also known as the “Mikado” found itself in rail yards around the world from the United States to the Congo hauling freight from stop to stop. The Mikado would undergo a temporary name change after the Pearl Harbor bombing in 1941 shortly going by the McArthur, before eventually going back to the Mikado name after WW2.
